Manchester United have set their sights on Edson Alvarez, the versatile Mexican international currently plying his trade at West Ham United.

This potential transfer could see Alvarez reunite with his former Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag, under whom he flourished and won two Dutch titles. According to reports from Sky Germany, ten Hag is keen to bring Alvarez to Old Trafford next season.

Despite Alvarez’s significant role in West Ham’s squad, the Hammers are reportedly open to the possibility of his departure. His estimated price tag, ranging from €60-80 million (£51m/$64m – £68m/$86m), reflects his market value and the high regard in which he is held.

United’s interest in Alvarez is partly driven by their need to find a capable successor for Casemiro, who is approaching the latter stages of his illustrious career. Ten Hag’s familiarity with Alvarez adds an extra layer of confidence in this pursuit, given the player’s versatility and proven track record.

Alvarez’s ability to perform various roles in midfield makes him an attractive target. Whether anchoring the defense or playing in a more advanced position, his adaptability would be a valuable asset for United.

The report indicates that while United have inquired about Alvarez’s valuation and future plans, no formal offers have been made yet, and negotiations remain in the preliminary stages.

In addition to Alvarez, United have shown interest in Benfica’s Joao Neves. However, Neves’ hefty £104 million ($132m) release clause makes him a less likely acquisition.

Thus, Alvarez appears to be a more feasible option, and should the transfer materialize, he would join his former Ajax teammates Lisandro Martinez and Antony at Carrington. This reunion could foster a sense of cohesion and familiarity, potentially easing Alvarez’s integration into the squad.

Alvarez’s journey to West Ham began after a proposed move to Chelsea fell through in 2022. West Ham subsequently signed him last summer as a replacement for Declan Rice, who departed for Arsenal. Alvarez quickly adapted to the demands of the Premier League, demonstrating his skills and solidifying his place in the team.

In his impressive debut season, he started 28 of West Ham’s 38 league games and played a crucial role in their Europa League campaign, contributing two goals and two assists.

United’s interest in Alvarez is well-founded, as he has proven himself in English football. The potential transfer underscores the club’s strategy of blending experienced international talent with players familiar to the manager’s system.

This approach aims to create a balanced and cohesive squad capable of competing at the highest levels. If successful, Alvarez’s move to Manchester United could be a significant step in the club’s ongoing efforts to strengthen their midfield and build a team for the future.
