The Federal Government has inaugurated a state-of-the-art electronic gate (E-gate) at the departure wing of Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, was officially unveiled during a ceremony on Friday.
The introduction of the E-gate is a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance passenger experience and strengthen security measures across Nigeria’s airports.
Festus Keyamo, in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, emphasized the transformative potential of this development, describing it as a reflection of the government’s dedication to upgrading the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
The E-gate project is the result of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group. Speaking at the inauguration, Keyamo highlighted how this collaboration underscores the importance of partnerships in driving innovation and development in critical sectors.

Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of FAAN, joined the minister at the ceremony, where the E-gate was officially commissioned. According to Keyamo, the E-gates are designed to streamline the passenger boarding process, making it faster and more efficient while also bolstering airport security measures.
“The E-gates are a step forward in ensuring that Nigeria’s aviation sector meets global standards for passenger facilitation and security,” said Keyamo.
In addition to the E-gates, the ceremony also featured the unveiling of four new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered airport transit buses. These buses represent another step toward sustainable transportation within Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.
Designed with accessibility in mind, the eco-friendly buses are equipped with features to accommodate persons with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity in airport operations. By integrating CNG-powered vehicles, Nigeria is taking a proactive approach to reducing its carbon footprint and aligning with global climate goals.

Keyamo described the initiative as part of a broader strategy to modernize Nigeria’s aviation sector while addressing environmental concerns. “These CNG-powered buses reflect our commitment to sustainability and innovation, providing passengers with an eco-friendly transit option while reinforcing our efforts to meet international climate targets,” he stated.
The introduction of E-gates and CNG-powered transit buses signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s aviation landscape. Together, these advancements aim to enhance operational efficiency, improve passenger satisfaction, and position the country’s aviation sector on par with international standards.
For passengers, the E-gates promise a seamless travel experience by reducing wait times and improving the boarding process. Meanwhile, the eco-friendly buses underscore Nigeria’s commitment to adopting sustainable practices in its pursuit of modernization.
Keyamo underscored the importance of partnerships in achieving these milestones, emphasizing how collaborations like the one between FAAN and UBA enable the government to achieve more ambitious goals.
“Partnerships like this one are key to driving the kind of development we envision for Nigeria’s aviation sector,” he said.
The unveiling of these projects reflects the government’s determination to transform Nigeria’s aviation industry into a world-class hub. With these advancements, Murtala Muhammad International Airport is setting a new benchmark for efficiency, security, and sustainability in the region.
As Nigeria continues to prioritize infrastructure development, the introduction of innovative technologies and eco-friendly solutions serves as a reminder that progress is achievable through collaboration, vision, and a commitment to excellence.
