Former U.S. President Donald Trump, now President-elect, stirred significant controversy on Saturday with a bold demand directed at BRICS member nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
In a fiery post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump called for a clear commitment from these nations to abandon any plans of creating a new BRICS currency or supporting alternatives that could challenge the dominance of the U.S. dollar in international trade.
Failure to comply, he warned, would result in severe economic consequences, including a 100% tariff on their exports to the United States.
“We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty US Dollar,” Trump wrote.
“If they fail to agree, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful US Economy. They can go find another ‘sucker’. There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the US Dollar in International Trade, and any Country that tries should wave goodbye to America.”
Trump’s statement reflects his signature confrontational style, blending economic protectionism with a nationalist tone. It also highlights his firm stance on preserving the U.S. dollar’s supremacy in global markets—a key pillar of America’s economic influence worldwide.

The idea of a BRICS currency has been gaining momentum in recent years. Member nations have expressed dissatisfaction with the U.S. dollar’s dominance in global trade and its outsized influence on their economies.
Talks of creating a shared currency or increasing trade in local currencies have been seen as steps to reduce reliance on the dollar and counterbalance the West’s economic hegemony.
In August 2023, during the BRICS summit in South Africa, leaders openly discussed mechanisms to facilitate trade outside the dollar framework. Although no concrete currency emerged from the discussions, the idea of financial independence from the U.S. remains a long-term objective for the bloc.
Trump’s threat of imposing 100% tariffs is a drastic measure that could escalate tensions between the U.S. and BRICS nations.
These countries collectively represent over 40% of the global population and a significant portion of the world’s GDP. A trade war of this magnitude could have far-reaching consequences, not just for the U.S. and BRICS economies but for global trade and financial stability.

For example, China and India are two of the largest trading partners of the United States. Tariffs of such magnitude would likely disrupt supply chains, raise prices for American consumers, and trigger retaliatory actions. Russia and Brazil, major exporters of natural resources, could redirect their trade partnerships, further fragmenting the global economy.
Despite Trump’s insistence that the U.S. dollar is irreplaceable in international trade, the reality is more nuanced. While the dollar remains the world’s reserve currency and a cornerstone of global commerce, its dominance has been gradually eroding.
Efforts by countries like China to internationalize the yuan and agreements between BRICS members to settle trade in local currencies are clear indicators of this shift.
However, creating a viable alternative to the dollar would require overcoming significant challenges, including establishing trust, ensuring stability, and building robust financial infrastructure. These hurdles mean that the U.S. dollar is unlikely to be dethroned in the immediate future, but the groundwork for long-term competition is being laid.
Trump’s ultimatum signals a continuation of his hardline economic policies, emphasizing American dominance and a zero-sum approach to international trade. His statement also underscores the geopolitical tensions surrounding the global financial system, as emerging economies challenge traditional Western dominance.

If Trump follows through on his threats, his administration would likely face intense criticism from U.S. businesses, allies, and global institutions, all of whom value economic stability and predictability. Moreover, such a move could accelerate efforts by BRICS and other nations to establish alternatives to the U.S.-led global order, potentially hastening the very outcome Trump seeks to prevent.
As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House, his demand to BRICS nations underscores the central role of the U.S. dollar in America’s global strategy.
Whether his tough rhetoric will deter BRICS members from pursuing financial independence or push them to double down on their efforts remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the world is entering an era of heightened competition and economic realignment, with significant implications for the future of international trade and finance.
