MI6 Chief Warns of Russian Sabotage Campaign in Europe and Nuclear Threats Amid Ukraine War

In a stark warning, Richard Moore, the head of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), has unveiled what he described as a “staggeringly reckless campaign” of Russian sabotage across Europe.

Speaking in Paris on Friday, Moore emphasized the broader implications of Russia’s actions under President Vladimir Putin, warning that the security of Britain, France, Europe, and the transatlantic alliance as a whole is under significant threat.

Moore disclosed that British intelligence had recently uncovered a series of Russian sabotage operations throughout Europe. These actions, he noted, were indicative of the Kremlin’s desperation as it seeks to maintain its grip on Ukraine while deterring Western nations from providing aid to Kyiv.

“This is a staggeringly reckless campaign,” Moore said, highlighting how these activities pose a direct threat to European stability.

The MI6 chief also pointed to Moscow’s use of nuclear rhetoric, describing it as “sabre-rattling” aimed at instilling fear among nations supporting Ukraine. The objective, he suggested, is to undermine international solidarity with Kyiv by raising the stakes of continued military and financial assistance.

Moore warned that allowing Russia to succeed in its goal of reducing Ukraine to a “vassal state” would embolden other authoritarian regimes around the world.

“If Putin succeeds, China would weigh the implications, North Korea would be emboldened, and Iran would become still more dangerous,” he cautioned.

He stressed that the repercussions of a Russian victory would extend far beyond Europe, reshaping the global balance of power and emboldening nations that oppose Western democratic values.

Acknowledging the substantial financial and military costs involved in supporting Ukraine, Moore argued that the price of inaction would be far greater.

“The cost of supporting Ukraine is well known,” he said. “But the cost of not doing so would be infinitely higher.”

The MI6 chief underscored the importance of continued Western unity and support for Ukraine, framing it as a pivotal moment in the defense of democratic values and global security.

Moore’s speech serves as both a warning and a rallying cry. It highlights the high stakes of the conflict in Ukraine and the need for sustained international resolve to counter Russian aggression.

His comments also underscore the broader geopolitical implications of the war, as nations like China, North Korea, and Iran closely monitor the West’s response. The message is clear: the outcome in Ukraine will have profound consequences for global stability and the future of international relations.

As Russia escalates its efforts to destabilize Europe and deter Western support for Ukraine, the actions of the international community will be critical. The warnings from MI6 chief Richard Moore highlight the urgency of standing firm against Russian aggression, not only to safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty but to protect the broader principles of freedom and security that underpin the global order.

With Europe and its allies facing one of the most significant challenges since the end of the Cold War, the cost of inaction could indeed be, as Moore described, “infinitely higher.”
