China Unveils Cutting-Edge Military Technology at Zhuhai Airshow 2024
China recently showcased its rapidly evolving military prowess at the highly anticipated Zhuhai Airshow, the nation’s premier aviation and defense exhibition. Held biennially in Guangdong Province, the event draws global industry leaders, defense experts, and enthusiasts, serving as a platform for unveiling groundbreaking advancements in military hardware and technology.

One of the marquee attractions of the airshow was the J-35A stealth fighter, China’s second fifth-generation fighter jet following the J-20. Designed with dual engines, the J-35A differs from its American counterpart, the single-engine F-35, offering enhanced power and redundancy.
The J-35A is engineered for versatile operations, capable of excelling in both air combat missions and precision strikes on land and maritime targets. Its adaptability and advanced stealth technology make it a formidable addition to China’s military arsenal. Experts anticipate the development of a twin navy variant, which could further bolster China’s carrier-based air capabilities.

China also unveiled the HQ-19, a next-generation surface-to-air missile system designed to counter modern missile threats. Capable of intercepting ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere, the HQ-19 represents a significant advancement in missile defense technology.
This system can track and neutralize hypersonic glide vehicles, a growing concern in global security. Mounted on a high-mobility 8×8 vehicle, the HQ-19 employs a “cold launch” mechanism, enhancing its operational flexibility and reducing wear on the missile’s internal components.
Another groundbreaking innovation showcased at the airshow was the Jetank drone mothership, a massive unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a wingspan of 25 meters. Designed to carry a payload of up to six tons, this jet-powered UAV acts as an airborne aircraft carrier, capable of launching smaller drones directly onto the battlefield.
With a maximum takeoff weight of 16 tons, the Jetank is poised to redefine battlefield dynamics, offering rapid deployment capabilities and enhanced operational reach.

In the maritime domain, China introduced the Orca stealth drone ship, a 500-ton unmanned surface combat vessel designed for radar evasion. Its trimaran structure ensures stability in rough seas while minimizing its radar signature.
Equipped with advanced phased array radars, vertical launch systems, and the capacity to carry a range of missile types, the Orca is versatile enough to conduct fire strikes, air and missile defense, and anti-submarine operations. This stealth ship underscores China’s efforts to integrate advanced automation and stealth technologies into naval warfare.
The PL-15E air-to-air missile, another highlight of the airshow, is designed for long-range engagements. With folding tail fins that allow for compact storage within stealth aircraft, the PL-15E achieves a range of approximately 200 kilometers and speeds exceeding Mach 5.
This missile rivals the U.S. AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM), signaling China’s capability to produce high-performance, long-range air defense systems.
The Zhuhai Airshow also witnessed the international debut of Russia’s Su-57 stealth fighter outside its homeland. As Russia’s most advanced fighter jet, its presence at the exhibition highlighted the growing military cooperation between China and Russia.
