According to GOAL, Atletico Madrid have reached a comprehensive agreement to sign Argentine forward Julian Alvarez from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

The English club is set to receive a club-record transfer fee of £82 million, including add-ons (€95 million/$104 million), in exchange for Alvarez, pending the 24-year-old finalizing personal terms with Atletico.

The negotiations between the two clubs, which began on Monday, have now culminated in a mutual agreement.

Atletico Madrid will now enter discussions with Alvarez regarding personal terms before the transfer is officially completed. Reports indicate that Alvarez is keen to embrace a new challenge away from Manchester City.

Alvarez, a World Cup-winning attacker, joined Manchester City from River Plate in January 2022 for a modest fee of €17 million (£14 million). He subsequently signed a new contract last year, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2028.

During his tenure with the Cityzens, Alvarez played a pivotal role in Pep Guardiola’s squad, contributing significantly to their treble-winning campaign in the 2022-23 season. His efforts also saw him net 11 league goals last season, aiding City in becoming the first club in English football history to secure four consecutive league titles.

The 24-year-old forward’s move to Atletico Madrid is highly anticipated, with fans eagerly awaiting his potential debut for Diego Simeone’s side. Alvarez could make his first appearance in La Liga on August 20, when Atletico Madrid begins their new season with a match against Villarreal.

This transfer marks a significant milestone for both clubs. For Manchester City, it represents a record-breaking transfer fee, while for Atletico Madrid, it signals a strategic acquisition aimed at bolstering their attacking options.

As Alvarez prepares to embark on this new chapter of his career, the football community will be closely watching his integration into Spanish football and his impact on Atletico Madrid’s quest for success in the upcoming season.
