Trump Survives Assassination Attempt; Bystander Killed Identified
In a shocking incident over the weekend, Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt just days before he is set to formally accept the Republican presidential nomination. The incident occurred during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. Trump, 78, had just begun his campaign speech when gunshots erupted. The former president was struck on his right ear, causing a superficial wound and streaking his face with blood.
Despite the chaos, Trump signaled to his supporters, mouthing “Fight! Fight! Fight!” while pumping his fist before Secret Service agents whisked him away. According to his campaign, he is in good spirits and has no major injuries other than the wound on his ear.
Tragically, a bystander named Corey Comperatore, 50, from Sarver, Pennsylvania, was fatally injured in the attack. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro informed reporters that Comperatore was killed while heroically protecting his family from the hail of bullets.

“Corey was an avid supporter of the former president and was thrilled to be there last night with his community,” Shapiro said. “Political disagreements can never, ever be addressed through violence.”
The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in the attempted assassination. Crooks, a registered Republican according to state voter records, had previously made a $15 donation to a Democratic political action committee at the age of 17.
Law enforcement officials are still investigating the motive behind the attack and have not yet determined if Crooks had any political affiliations that influenced his actions.
Both Republicans and Democrats are closely watching the investigation, each eager to find evidence that could potentially cast the opposing party as representing extremism. This incident is likely to further polarize the already tense political landscape in the lead-up to the presidential election.
