Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Confirmed as U.S. Health Secretary

The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate has confirmed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Despite fierce opposition from the medical community due to his history of promoting vaccine misinformation and conspiracy theories, Kennedy secured the role with a narrow 52-48 vote. His confirmation marks a significant and controversial addition to President Donald Trump’s cabinet.

Kennedy, widely known as “RFK Jr.,” is the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and has built a career as an environmental lawyer and activist.

Over the years, however, he has become one of the most vocal critics of vaccines, frequently spreading discredited claims linking childhood immunizations to autism. His nomination raised alarm among public health experts, who fear his leadership could undermine trust in science-based policymaking.

Even within Republican ranks, Kennedy’s appointment was not without resistance. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell broke party lines to vote against him, making him the only GOP senator to oppose the nomination.

However, Kennedy’s recent shift toward conservative positions on key issues—most notably abortion, where he has moved away from his previous pro-choice stance—helped secure support from Republican lawmakers.

Now at the helm of an agency overseeing more than 80,000 employees and a $1.7 trillion budget, Kennedy assumes leadership at a critical time. Scientists have warned of the looming threat of a bird flu pandemic, while declining vaccination rates have led to the resurgence of once-eradicated childhood diseases like measles and polio.

During his confirmation hearings, Kennedy attempted to shift focus to his “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) initiative—an apparent nod to Trump’s signature slogan.

His plan emphasizes tackling the nation’s chronic disease crisis and holding the food industry accountable for its role in declining public health. However, critics remain skeptical of his ability to navigate the department’s complex challenges, given his track record of promoting medical misinformation.

Beyond his controversial public health views, Kennedy also faced scrutiny over financial conflicts of interest. Senate Democrats pointed to lucrative consulting fees he received from law firms engaged in lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies.

Additionally, allegations of sexual misconduct and claims he has made linking school shootings to antidepressants added further controversy to his confirmation process.

Despite these concerns, Kennedy managed to gain the support he needed, positioning himself as an outsider willing to challenge the establishment. Whether his tenure at HHS will lead to meaningful reform or further division remains to be seen.
