Tech billionaire Elon Musk has been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his strong advocacy for free speech. The nomination was officially submitted to the Norwegian Nobel Committee by Branko Grims, a member of the European Parliament from Slovenia.

Grims, who has been vocal about Musk’s contributions to free speech, shared a screenshot of the confirmation email from the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The email stated, “Your nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 has been successfully submitted.”

Expressing his gratitude to co-proposers and supporters of the nomination, Grims wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “The proposal that Mr. Elon Musk, for his consistent support for the fundamental human right of freedom of speech and thus for peace, receives the Nobel Peace Prize 2025, was successfully submitted today. Sincere thanks to all the co-proposers and everyone who helped with this challenging project!”

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has often positioned himself as a defender of free speech, particularly since acquiring X (formerly Twitter) in 2022. His approach to content moderation and open dialogue has sparked both praise and criticism, with supporters arguing that he has done more for freedom of speech than anyone else in the modern era.

In December 2023, Grims had already expressed his support for Musk’s nomination, stating in an interview with Brussels Signal that the billionaire “deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his unwavering promotion of free speech, which is a fundamental human right.

Musk’s nomination has also received backing from other political figures. In February 2024, Marius Nilsen, a Norwegian Member of Parliament, also put Musk forward for the prestigious award.

According to Nilsen, Musk’s “adamant defense of dialogue and free speech” in an increasingly polarized world makes him a worthy recipient. He also credited Musk’s tech companies for helping to “make the world a more connected and safer place.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and nominations undergo rigorous evaluation before the winner is announced in October.
