Julian Nagelsmann Extends Tenure as Germany Coach Through Euro 2028

Germany’s national football team is set to continue its resurgence under the leadership of Julian Nagelsmann, who has signed a contract extension to remain head coach until the end of Euro 2028. The German Football Association (DFB) announced the news on Friday during its 125th-anniversary celebrations in Leipzig.

The 37-year-old tactician, who initially took the job on a short-term basis for Euro 2024, expressed his excitement about staying on for the 2026 World Cup and beyond. “We are on the right path, and it’s not over yet,” Nagelsmann said in a statement. “We want to continue developing and aim to win titles.”

Nagelsmann stepped into the role in 2023, inheriting a team that had struggled in recent major tournaments.

Germany faced early exits in the group stages of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and was eliminated in the Round of 16 by England at Euro 2020. The challenges were compounded by Hansi Flick’s dismissal, marking the first time a German national team coach was sacked.

Despite these setbacks, Nagelsmann has already made an impact. At Euro 2024, hosted by Germany, the team topped their group and showcased a promising revival, though they fell in extra time to eventual champions Spain in the quarter-finals.

Nagelsmann’s leadership has also propelled Germany to the Nations League knockout stage for the first time, where they will face Italy in a two-legged quarter-final in March.

Nagelsmann’s meteoric rise in football management is well-documented. He became the youngest coach in Bundesliga history at age 28 when he took over Hoffenheim in 2016.

Stints at RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich followed, with his tenure at Bayern highlighted by a Bundesliga title in the 2021-22 season. However, his surprising dismissal in March 2023 left him free to take up the reins of the national team.

His decision to extend his contract through Euro 2028 cements his commitment to the long-term development of German football. The DFB’s president, Bernd Neuendorf, hailed the extension as a “significant signal” for the sport’s future in Germany.

Nagelsmann’s continuation puts to rest speculation about his return to club football following the 2026 World Cup. It also delays the prospects of Jurgen Klopp, a long-rumored candidate for the national team job after his departure from Liverpool last year.

Reflecting on his journey so far, Nagelsmann shared how Euro 2024 deepened his appreciation for the national team’s significance. “Our goal was a successful tournament, but I couldn’t have imagined how deeply the national team moves people in Germany,” he said.

As Germany looks toward the 2026 World Cup in North America and Euro 2028 in Britain and Ireland, Nagelsmann’s leadership brings hope for a return to glory for the four-time World Cup winners.
