TikTok Goes Dark in the U.S. as Ban Takes Effect

Late Saturday, TikTok users across the United States were met with a somber message as the app disconnected access, just hours before a national ban was set to take effect.

The move follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld a law banning the popular video-sharing platform unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, reached a deal to sell to non-Chinese buyers.

“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S.,” read the message to users. “Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.”

The platform expressed optimism for its future, citing support from President-elect Donald Trump. “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”

The TikTok ban marks the culmination of months of legal and political turmoil, with U.S. officials citing national security concerns over the app’s ties to China. Despite TikTok’s popularity—transforming everyday users into viral sensations and bringing communities together—its ownership by ByteDance has been a persistent point of contention.

The Supreme Court’s decision requires Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores, blocking new downloads. Both companies could face steep penalties—up to $5,000 per user—if the app remains accessible.

Outgoing President Joe Biden’s administration opted to leave the matter in Trump’s hands, with White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre dismissing TikTok’s statements as a “stunt.”

In an interview with NBC News, Trump hinted at a potential solution. “A 90-day extension is certainly an option,” he said, referencing a clause in the law that allows for delays if progress toward a sale is demonstrated. “I’ll likely make an announcement about this on Monday after the inauguration.”

TikTok CEO Shou Chew has also expressed hope for a resolution. In a statement, he thanked Trump for his willingness to collaborate and acknowledged the president’s understanding of the platform. Chew is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday, signaling further discussions ahead.
