FIFA Bans Panaman FA President, Arias Following Ethics Violation

FIFA’s ethics committee has handed down a ban and a fine to former Panamanian football official Pedro Arias following derogatory comments he made about star player Marta Cox. The incident, which occurred in March of last year, stemmed from Arias’ public criticism of Cox, where he referred to her as “fat” and “out of shape.”

Arias made the remarks in response to Cox’s critique of the inadequate facilities provided to Panama’s women’s national team after their elimination from the CONCACAF W Gold Cup.

In a media statement at the time, Arias hit back harshly, saying: “She’s out of shape, she’s fat, she couldn’t move on the pitch. It’s very easy to talk, but she doesn’t know anything about the Panama league for years; she doesn’t know what’s going on here.”

Although Arias apologized shortly after making the comments, FIFA launched an investigation and found him guilty of breaching its code of ethics. Describing his remarks as “derogatory,” FIFA imposed a ban that prevents Arias from participating in football-related activities until July 14. In addition, he was fined nearly £9,000.

In accepting FIFA’s decision, Arias expressed regret, referring to his statements as “very unfortunate language” and “a very serious mistake.”

The incident initially led Marta Cox to consider stepping away from the national team. However, she has since returned to the squad, proving her resilience on and off the pitch. Cox, who scored Panama’s first-ever goal in a Women’s World Cup group stage, now boasts 42 caps to her name and remains a central figure in the team.

The controversy highlights ongoing challenges in women’s football, including respect for players and investment in their development. While Arias’ remarks drew widespread condemnation, they also sparked discussions about the treatment of female athletes and the resources allocated to their teams.
