Brazilian government has officially announced Nigeria’s admission as a partner country in the BRICS bloc. The announcement was made by Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Friday, highlighting the shared priorities and common goals that unite Nigeria and BRICS member states.
With a population of over 223 million—the largest in Africa—and as one of the continent’s economic powerhouses, Nigeria stands out as a strategic ally for BRICS. The partnership aligns with the bloc’s commitment to enhancing South-South cooperation and pushing for reforms in global governance structures.
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry emphasized Nigeria’s critical role in advancing these objectives, stating: “With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS.”
“It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance—issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency.”
Nigeria’s inclusion as a partner country follows the creation of this category during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, held in October 2024.

This new grouping brings together nations that share BRICS’ vision but are not yet full members. Alongside Nigeria, eight other countries—Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan—have been granted partner status.
As the current BRICS president for 2025, Brazil is steering the bloc toward greater inclusivity and global influence. The baton was passed from Russia on January 1, and under Brazil’s leadership, there has been a renewed focus on strengthening ties among Global South nations.
This development underscores the bloc’s growing recognition of Africa’s strategic importance in shaping the future of global politics and economics. Nigeria’s admission reflects not only its own ambitions but also BRICS’ evolving approach to international partnerships.
Nigeria’s partnership with BRICS opens new doors for collaboration in areas such as trade, infrastructure, and governance reform. It signals a deepening of ties between Africa and other regions of the Global South, setting the stage for a more balanced global order where emerging economies have a stronger voice.
