Super Eagles Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali Mourns Again

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, has lost his mother, months after announcing the death of his father. On Wednesday evening, Nwabali took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the heartbreaking passing of his mother. His simple yet profound message read, “RIP mom,” accompanied by an emotional admission: “Worst year of my life already.”

The grief-stricken goalkeeper had earlier posted another reflective message, saying, “A very very crazy world indeed,” hinting at the immense pain and turmoil he has endured. While details surrounding his mother’s passing remain undisclosed, the weight of the tragedy is unmistakable, especially as it comes just over a month after he lost his father.

Nwabali’s father, Godspower Onyekam Abali, a respected community leader and the Chief Onyeogazrim 1 of Okwuzi, passed away at the age of 67 in mid-November 2024.

This devastating loss occurred mere hours before the Super Eagles’ crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Rwanda. In light of the circumstances, the team’s management granted Nwabali compassionate leave from the game.

Despite his personal grief, the 28-year-old goalkeeper chose to stand by his teammates and attended the match to offer his support from the sidelines. Speaking to the press, Super Eagles Team Administrator Dayo Enebi Achor confirmed the decision:

“He has been excused from the game. However, the player will come to watch the match and cheer his teammates on.” This gesture showcased Nwabali’s resilience and his unwavering commitment to the team, even in the face of unimaginable sorrow.

Fans, teammates, and supporters have rallied around the goalkeeper, flooding social media with messages of condolences and prayers. Many have praised his courage and vulnerability in sharing his pain, while also acknowledging the significant role his parents played in shaping the man and athlete he is today.
