China has unveiled the world’s largest amphibious assault ship, named the Sichuan. The country has again demonstrated its growing military prowess by also testing flights for a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet, named the J-36
On Friday, the Sichuan, China’s newest and largest amphibious assault ship, entered the water at a shipyard in Shanghai. This cutting-edge vessel is a part of the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) strategy to transform its naval capabilities and extend its operational reach.
Named after Sichuan province in southwestern China, the Type 076 assault ship boasts a full-load displacement exceeding 40,000 tonnes, making it the largest vessel of its kind globally.
The ship’s innovative features include a dual-island superstructure, a full-length flight deck, and advanced electromagnetic catapult and arrestor systems. These technologies enable it to deploy fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and amphibious equipment, positioning the Sichuan as a critical asset for PLAN.

According to a state-run Xinhua report, the Sichuan represents a leap forward in China’s naval capabilities, aligning with the nation’s goals of enhancing long-range operations and asserting its influence in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
With the PLAN hailing the vessel as a “key asset,” it underscores China’s ambitions to challenge traditional maritime powers, including the United States, in strategically vital regions.
China’s rise as a naval power is underpinned by its dominance in global shipbuilding. With a capacity 230 times greater than that of the United States, Beijing has solidified its position as the world’s largest shipbuilder.
This industrial advantage has allowed the country to rapidly expand and modernize its navy, building advanced warships like the Sichuan at an unprecedented pace.

The launch of the Sichuan also comes as China’s defense spending for 2024 increased by 7.2%, reaching 1.67 trillion yuan (approximately $229 billion). This sustained investment reflects Beijing’s focus on building a military that can compete with—and potentially surpass—traditional superpowers.
Adding to its arsenal, China is reportedly testing a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet, the J-36. Unverified images of the aircraft recently surfaced on social media, showing it flying over Chengdu alongside a fifth-generation J-20 fighter jet.
The J-36’s distinctive triangular, tailless design has sparked widespread speculation about its capabilities. Experts believe the design enhances stealth and maneuverability, offering a significant leap in aerial warfare. If confirmed, the J-36 could challenge U.S. aerial superiority, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, where China seeks to establish dominance.

The jet’s emergence comes shortly after the unveiling of the Baidi White Emperor “B Type” sixth-generation fighter at the Zhuhai Airshow in November. The timing of the J-36’s debut, coinciding with Mao Zedong’s birthday, suggests deliberate messaging by Beijing, linking its military advancements to its ideological and historical roots.
China’s military advancements are not isolated achievements but part of a broader strategy that dates back to the 1980s. Under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) began a comprehensive modernization program aimed at aligning its capabilities with the demands of contemporary warfare.
These efforts have accelerated under President Xi Jinping, who has prioritized military development as a cornerstone of China’s national rejuvenation. From advanced naval vessels to cutting-edge fighter jets, Beijing is working on all fronts to shift the balance of power in its favor.
