Chelsea Set for January Clear-Out: Five Players Tipped for Departure

Ben Chilwell, once a key player for Chelsea, now finds himself on the fringes. After being told he could leave last summer, the left-back has struggled to make an impact this season.

His playing time has been limited to just 45 minutes in the Carabao Cup against Barrow, and he hasn’t even made the bench in the Premier League. Chilwell’s situation signals a potential departure, either permanently or on loan, as he seeks a fresh start elsewhere.

Similarly, Carney Chukwuemeka is tipped for a move, though his circumstances differ. The 20-year-old midfielder carries a hefty £40 million ($50m) release clause, but Chelsea may consider a loan deal if no club is willing to meet that valuation.

Despite his potential, Chukwuemeka has been frozen out of the first team, managing only four appearances in the Conference League and none in the Premier League. His lack of playing time complicates a potential sale, as suitors may be hesitant without seeing him in action.

Manager Enzo Maresca recently acknowledged the players’ frustrations with limited game time. Speaking shortly before Christmas, he noted, “Probably they are the first to say they want to leave because they train every day, they want to play games, and if they don’t play games, they are probably thinking of leaving.” Maresca’s comments suggest the club is open to finding solutions for players seeking exits, whether through loans or transfers.

Of the potential departures, selling Chukwuemeka would be the most financially lucrative for Chelsea. However, his lack of playing time in the first half of the season presents a challenge. Chilwell has been on the periphery, and the other players, while promising, have not broken into regular senior roles.
