Man Utd Legend Outlines Why Red Devils are Still Struggling Under Amorim

Manchester United’s turbulent season continues to make headlines, even after the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach. Former United defender Jaap Stam has weighed in on the challenges facing the Red Devils as they navigate through a difficult 2024-25 campaign.

After parting ways with Erik ten Hag in October following a disastrous start to the season, the club hoped that Amorim, known for his tactical acumen, could reignite their form.

However, the Portuguese manager’s tenure has yet to yield the dramatic turnaround fans were hoping for. With only four wins in his first nine games, questions remain about United’s ability to adapt to Amorim’s vision.

Jaap Stam, speaking to SportLens, shared his perspective on the ongoing struggles at Old Trafford, drawing parallels between the difficulties faced by Ten Hag and those confronting Amorim.

“We could see what Erik ten Hag was trying to do at Manchester United,” Stam explained. “His philosophy was clear from his time at Ajax, but the players struggled to execute the game plan. That responsibility falls on both the manager and the players. The same question arises now with Amorim: can the players adapt and dominate games within his three-at-the-back system?”

According to Stam, the current squad has yet to master Amorim’s tactical approach. Despite a handful of wins, United’s performances have lacked the dominance expected of a 20-time Premier League champion. “It’s still not very convincing,” Stam added, emphasizing the need for patience and tactical fine-tuning.

Stam also highlighted the importance of the upcoming transfer window in shaping Amorim’s success at the club. “The manager knows the team isn’t up to standard yet,” Stam stated. “That’s why there will be interest in the transfer window. United will need to bring in players who can fit Amorim’s system and move others on who can’t meet the required standards.”

He outlined the specific qualities needed in the squad: Defenders: Agile enough to cover large spaces when wing-backs push forward – Midfielders: Possessing both strong ball-handling skills and the stamina to track back and attack – Forwards: Versatile enough to make runs behind defenses and drop deep when necessary.

“Scott McTominay has always been an important player at Manchester United, even if he wasn’t a guaranteed starter,” Stam said. “He scored vital goals and had a significant impact on the team. Losing a player like that is a big blow for any club.”

At Napoli, McTominay has thrived as a regular starter, and Stam believes his growing confidence demonstrates why United should have kept him. “Sometimes tough decisions are necessary, but I wouldn’t have been keen to sell McTominay,” he remarked. “Players like him bring a unique influence, both on and off the pitch.”

Stam also referenced rumors about Marcus Rashford potentially leaving, suggesting United needs to carefully consider the long-term implications of such departures.
