Chelsea’s second-string squad showcased resilience and grit as they secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Heidenheim in the Europa Conference League, keeping their unbeaten record intact. While the scoreline suggests a straightforward win, the match was anything but, as the German side pushed the Blues to their limits in a lively and fiercely contested affair.
Christopher Nkunku continued his stellar form in Europe, netting his seventh goal of the campaign and proving pivotal yet again. The Frenchman could have easily walked away with a hat-trick on another night, but Heidenheim’s spirited performance and goalkeeper Kevin Müller’s heroics kept the game tense until the dying minutes.
Nkunku’s breakthrough came in the second half, courtesy of a precise cross from Jadon Sancho, which he converted with a clinical finish. Sancho’s contribution was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise lackluster display by Chelsea’s outfield players, as many struggled to stake a claim for a place in the starting lineup ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa.
Chelsea’s Filip Jørgensen was instrumental in securing the win, pulling off a series of crucial saves throughout the match.
His reflexes were tested early and often, with standout stops against Mikkel Kaufmann, Leonardo Scienza, and Mathias Honsak. Jørgensen’s composure between the posts ensured that Chelsea kept their clean sheet intact, even as Heidenheim piled on the pressure.

At the other end, Müller was equally impressive for the hosts, denying Nkunku, Tosin Adarabioyo, and substitute João Félix to keep his side in the game until the final moments.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that Heidenheim would not be an easy opponent. Within the first minute, Benoît Badiashile, one of the few players retained from Chelsea’s weekend win over Leicester, found himself booked for a foul on Scienza. Moments later, Kaufmann narrowly missed converting the resulting free kick.
The first half was a frenetic, end-to-end affair filled with chances for both sides. Marc Guiu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had opportunities for Chelsea, while Heidenheim threatened through Kaufmann and Scienza. Despite the flurry of chances, the first half ended goalless, thanks to strong goalkeeping and some last-ditch defending.
Chelsea thought they had a chance to take the lead earlier when Mykhailo Mudryk was brought down by Heidenheim captain Patrick Mainka, prompting the referee to award a penalty. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, much to the frustration of the visiting side.

Nkunku and Adarabioyo came close to breaking the deadlock, but Müller’s acrobatics ensured the score remained level at halftime.
As Heidenheim continued to press for an equalizer in the second half, Mudryk delivered the decisive blow in the 85th minute. The Ukrainian winger rifled a thunderous shot into the top corner after a clever setup by Sancho, effectively putting the game beyond the reach of the hosts.
Mudryk’s goal capped off a challenging evening for Chelsea, who had to dig deep to secure the win. The victory was marred slightly by a late red card for Cesare Casadei, who received a second yellow card in stoppage time.
Chelsea’s performance against Heidenheim highlighted both their depth and their vulnerability. While the win keeps them atop their Europa Conference League group with a perfect record, it also underscores the need for improvement, particularly as they prepare for tougher challenges in domestic and European competitions.
For now, though, the Blues can celebrate a hard-earned victory that showcases their resilience and determination to succeed, even on difficult nights.
