In a significant post-election move, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced his nomination of former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to serve as the next U.S. Attorney General. Bondi, a longtime ally of Trump, was chosen to replace former nominee Matt Gaetz, who withdrew from consideration amid allegations and a controversial track record.
Matt Gaetz, a former congressman from Florida, had initially been Trump’s pick for the role. However, his nomination faced significant hurdles due to an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving a 17-year-old girl and illicit drug use—charges he has vehemently denied. The controversy surrounding Gaetz prompted his withdrawal, leaving room for Bondi to step in as the nominee.
Trump’s choice of Bondi marks a shift toward a candidate with extensive legal and prosecutorial experience, a factor that could help avoid some of the backlash Gaetz was likely to encounter.
Pam Bondi, 59, served as Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019, making history as the state’s first woman to hold the position.
During her tenure, she gained a reputation for being tough on crime and spearheaded major legal battles, including those related to opioid abuse. She also played a significant role on Trump’s Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during his first administration, further solidifying her ties with the president.

Bondi’s connection to Trump extends beyond her role as a state prosecutor. She was part of his legal defense team during his first impeachment trial, where she defended him against charges of withholding military aid to Ukraine to pressure the country into investigating then-political rival Joe Biden. The Senate ultimately acquitted Trump.
More recently, Bondi has been a key figure at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank closely aligned with Trump’s political agenda. Her work with the institute has focused on shaping policy for Trump’s anticipated second term.
Announcing her nomination on social media, Trump lauded Bondi’s prosecutorial expertise and her track record of tackling crime in Florida. “Pam Bondi is tough, experienced, and ready to put an end to the politicization of federal prosecutions,” Trump said. “For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans—Not anymore.”
Bondi’s nomination comes as Trump continues to face multiple criminal investigations at the state and federal levels, heightening the stakes for the next Attorney General. Her appointment, if confirmed, would position her to oversee critical Justice Department operations and decisions.

Legal analysts and political observers have noted Bondi’s robust qualifications for the role. David Weinstein, a former federal prosecutor in Florida and current defense attorney, highlighted her extensive prosecutorial background as a key strength. “She spent her career prosecuting cases and has a resume far more suited for the position compared to the last nominee,” Weinstein said.
However, some critics view the nomination as another example of Trump prioritizing loyalty in his selections for key positions. Bondi’s past association with Trump’s impeachment defense team and her close alignment with his policies could lead to questions about her impartiality in administering justice.
Bondi’s nomination will likely face rigorous scrutiny in the Senate, where Democrats and some Republicans have expressed concerns about politicization within the Justice Department. Nevertheless, her prosecutorial background and longstanding support for Trump’s agenda could garner enough support for her confirmation.
If confirmed, Pam Bondi will take on the critical role of leading the Justice Department during a time of heightened political division, intense scrutiny, and significant legal challenges for Trump’s administration.
