The arrest of Simon Ekpa, a prominent separatist leader, by Finnish police has been hailed by Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters as a significant milestone in the nation’s ongoing fight against terrorism. In separate statements issued by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, and Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the Defence Headquarters expressed satisfaction with Ekpa’s apprehension. Both officers emphasized the importance of this arrest in addressing the violence and instability in southeastern Nigeria, where Ekpa has been accused of inciting unrest.
Brigadier General Gusau noted the positive response of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, to the news. “The CDS is happy with Simon Ekpa’s arrest in Finland and is hopeful this marks a step toward his extradition to Nigeria to face justice,” said Gusau.
Similarly, Major General Buba lauded the cooperation of international authorities, stating: “This arrest demonstrates that the global community stands with Nigeria in its fight against terrorism. The CDS has consistently called for Ekpa’s arrest, given his deep involvement in fueling terrorism in southeastern Nigeria. We are delighted by this development.”
Simon Ekpa, widely regarded as a key figure in the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been accused of using social media platforms to spread separatist propaganda and incite violence in southeastern Nigeria. The Defence Headquarters had previously declared Ekpa wanted on March 23, 2023, along with 96 other individuals linked to terrorism across the country.

Ekpa’s influence has been linked to escalating violence in the region, including attacks on security personnel and civilians. His rhetoric, often disseminated through online platforms, has been described as divisive and dangerous.
The Finnish authorities have now implicated Ekpa in a range of terror-related activities, including public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and terrorism financing. Investigations revealed that these activities date back to at least August 23, 2021.
Following his arrest, a Finnish district court in Lahti ordered Ekpa’s remand based on probable cause for public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent. Authorities also linked Ekpa to questionable financial practices, including raising funds through methods considered illegal.
This isn’t the first time Finnish authorities have scrutinized Ekpa; earlier investigations into his activities revealed alleged financial crimes.
Ekpa’s arrest was not an isolated event. Finnish police also detained four other individuals connected to terror-related activities. These arrests highlight the international commitment to combating terrorism and addressing its financial underpinnings.
