Zelensky Warns of Defeat Without U.S. Support Amid Uncertain Future with Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of the United States cutting military aid to Ukraine. In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Zelensky candidly acknowledged the precariousness of his country’s position in its ongoing war against Russia.
“If they cut [funding], we will — I think we will lose,” Zelensky stated. While expressing Ukraine’s determination to continue the fight, he emphasized that domestic military production alone would not suffice to secure victory or ensure survival. “We will fight. We have our production, but it’s not enough to prevail. And I think it’s not enough to survive,” he admitted.
Since the Russian invasion in early 2022, the United States has been a cornerstone of Ukraine’s defense strategy, providing billions in military aid under President Joe Biden’s administration. Advanced weaponry and financial support have bolstered Ukraine’s resistance, enabling it to mount counteroffensives and prevent Russian forces from achieving complete dominance.
However, the future of this critical support hangs in the balance as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office in January. Trump has been a vocal critic of the financial aid extended to Ukraine, questioning its necessity and impact on U.S. interests.
While Trump has repeatedly promised to end the war “quickly,” he has yet to outline specific plans for achieving peace. This ambiguity raises concerns in Kyiv, where officials fear that a shift in U.S. policy could significantly weaken Ukraine’s position on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.

The debate over U.S. support for Ukraine intensified recently following Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use American-supplied long-range missiles for strikes inside Russian territory. This move drew sharp criticism from Trump’s allies, who accused Biden of dangerously escalating the conflict.
Zelensky, however, underscored the importance of maintaining unity between Ukraine and the United States. “Unity between Ukraine and the United States is most important,” he told Fox News.
The Ukrainian leader expressed hope that Trump could leverage his influence to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into ending the war. “He is much stronger than Putin,” Zelensky said of Trump. He also pointed out that Putin’s willingness to end the conflict depends largely on U.S. actions. “Putin is weaker than the United States of America,” Zelensky asserted, calling attention to the pivotal role America plays in shaping the course of the war.
As Russia continues to gain ground in key regions, the conversation around possible peace negotiations has grown louder. Ukraine is wary of entering talks from a position of weakness, especially if U.S. military support diminishes. Zelensky’s comments reflect the deep anxiety within Kyiv about being forced into an unfavorable settlement that could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ongoing war has exacted a heavy toll on Ukraine, with mounting casualties and widespread devastation. While international aid has helped sustain the country’s defense efforts, Zelensky’s warning underscores the vital role of continued U.S. support in ensuring Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression.

As Trump prepares to take office, the future of U.S. involvement in the war remains uncertain. Will his administration adopt a hands-off approach, or will Trump use his touted negotiating skills to broker a resolution?
For Zelensky and Ukraine, the stakes could not be higher. The potential loss of U.S. support would dramatically alter the dynamics of the conflict, leaving Ukraine more vulnerable to Russian advances. At the same time, a hasty or poorly negotiated peace deal risks compromising Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term stability.
In the months ahead, all eyes will be on Washington as Trump’s administration shapes its foreign policy agenda. For Ukraine, maintaining unity with its most powerful ally will be crucial in navigating the complex and uncertain path to peace.
