New Nvidia AI Chips Face Overheating Issues, Raising Concerns Among Customers

Nvidia’s highly anticipated Blackwell AI chips, unveiled earlier this year, are facing significant challenges that could impact their deployment in critical data centers.

These powerful graphics processing units (GPUs), designed to revolutionize AI computations, have encountered delays and are now reportedly struggling with overheating issues when used in large server setups, according to sources cited by The Information.

The Blackwell GPUs are engineered to be integrated into server racks holding up to 72 chips. However, overheating has emerged as a persistent issue, with Nvidia suppliers being asked to redesign the server racks multiple times to address these concerns. Employees, suppliers, and customers familiar with the situation have confirmed the ongoing struggles to resolve the overheating problem.

In a statement to Reuters, an Nvidia spokesperson emphasized that the company is working closely with leading cloud service providers to address these challenges. “Engineering iterations are normal and expected,” the spokesperson noted, suggesting that such hurdles are a part of the innovation process.

Originally slated for shipment in the second quarter of 2024, the Blackwell chips have already faced delays, potentially affecting major customers such as Meta Platforms, Google, and Microsoft. These tech giants rely on cutting-edge GPUs to power their AI operations, including advanced chatbot models and cloud services.

The overheating issues could further complicate timelines, causing concern among customers who need to scale up their data centers to accommodate Nvidia’s high-performance chips. Adjustments to server rack designs are necessary to ensure the chips can operate without thermal constraints, a critical factor in large-scale AI deployments.
