Prime Minister Narendra Modi Embarks on Three-Nation Tour to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana for Strategic Partnership and Global Diplomacy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to undertake a significant three-nation tour beginning November 16, with visits to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana.
This journey marks an important milestone in India’s diplomatic efforts to strengthen strategic alliances, bolster economic cooperation, and reinforce India’s role in global and regional affairs. The tour includes Modi’s participation in the annual G20 Summit in Brazil and high-level engagements with leaders across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
Modi’s first destination is Nigeria, where he will meet Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a two-day visit from November 16 to 17. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years, signaling the importance of Nigeria as a strategic partner in West Africa.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that the visit will focus on reviewing the robust India-Nigeria partnership, which has grown significantly since the two countries formalized a strategic partnership in 2007. The talks are expected to explore opportunities to deepen bilateral ties across multiple sectors, including energy, defense, trade, and development cooperation.
India has established itself as one of Nigeria’s primary economic partners. Over 200 Indian companies have invested more than $27 billion in Nigeria across key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, energy, infrastructure, and telecommunications.
The visit will also provide Modi an opportunity to address a gathering of the Indian community in Nigeria, which has contributed significantly to the cultural and economic bonds between the two nations. As part of the visit, both leaders will likely discuss enhancing development cooperation, economic growth, and avenues to further support Nigeria’s aspirations within the African continent.

Following his visit to Nigeria, PM Modi will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Summit from November 18 to 19. As part of the G20 Troika, along with Brazil and South Africa, India’s presence in this summit holds substantial significance, particularly as Modi is expected to continue his advocacy for the Global South.
The summit will be an opportunity for India to further advance the priorities it emphasized during its recent G20 presidency, which ended on November 30 last year. Under its leadership, India focused on themes such as inclusive economic growth, digital innovation, climate financing, and equitable health access, with a strong emphasis on benefiting developing nations.
At the G20 Summit, PM Modi will put forth India’s stance on key global issues and discuss the outcomes from India’s G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration and Voice of the Global South Summits. On the sidelines of the summit, Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders, engaging in dialogues that could influence critical issues such as trade, climate change, and energy security.
After the G20 Summit, Modi’s final stop will be in Guyana from November 19 to 21, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American country since 1968. This visit comes at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who had earlier visited India in 2023 as the chief guest at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Indore, where he was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.
The Guyana visit represents a key moment in India’s outreach to Latin America and the Caribbean region. Modi is scheduled to hold discussions with President Ali, meet senior Guyanese leaders, and address both the Parliament of Guyana and the Indian diaspora in Georgetown.
As India and Guyana explore stronger economic partnerships, energy cooperation will be a likely focus, given Guyana’s oil-rich economy and India’s interest in expanding its energy portfolio.
Moreover, Modi will participate in the second CARICOM-India Summit, engaging with leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), an organization of 15 Caribbean states working to foster regional economic integration and cooperation.
This summit will underscore India’s commitment to deepening ties with the Caribbean region, especially in areas such as trade, infrastructure, and capacity-building. CARICOM leaders and Modi are expected to explore opportunities for collaboration on pressing issues like climate resilience, sustainable development, and technology exchange.
