China Calls for “Peaceful Coexistence” with U.S. as Trump Secures Re-election

On the morning of Donald Trump’s re-election as President of the United States, China reiterated its call for stability and cooperation in its relationship with the U.S. The official statement from the Chinese government underscored a desire for “peaceful coexistence,” reaffirming that China’s stance toward the U.S. remains unchanged and guided by principles of mutual respect and cooperation.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, speaking to the press, stated, “China’s U.S. policy is consistent and clear. We view and handle our relations with the U.S. under the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.” This statement emphasizes China’s broader commitment to maintaining diplomatic ties and avoiding unnecessary friction.

While maintaining an official position of neutrality on the U.S. election results, China has labeled the event as “an internal matter of the United States.” Nevertheless, Chinese state media has reflected on the U.S. electoral process with a certain level of scrutiny, often highlighting the stark political and social divisions revealed in American politics. This portrayal aligns with a prevailing sentiment in China that U.S.-China relations may remain challenging, regardless of the election’s outcome.

Analysts in China widely suggest that even with Trump’s renewed presidency, the tense bilateral relationship between the two superpowers is unlikely to see significant improvement. China-U.S. relations have been marked by trade disputes, technological competition, and geopolitical tensions in recent years, with neither country signaling a readiness to significantly shift course.

China’s perspective on U.S. political dynamics is rooted in the perception that the United States is grappling with internal divisions, a theme frequently spotlighted in Chinese media. While this viewpoint highlights perceived political dysfunction in the U.S., it also reflects a broader consensus in China that its own approach to governance and diplomacy will prioritize internal stability and external cooperation.

Amidst these broader dynamics, China has consistently communicated its wish to avoid a confrontational path. Yet with rising competition and differing strategic priorities, the relationship is expected to remain complex.

As Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential race became evident, European leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strong transatlantic ties, quickly extending congratulations.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to build a more united, sovereign Europe while maintaining close U.S. ties. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the “sister nation” relationship, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer looked forward to continuing the “special relationship.” NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed anticipation for renewed collaboration under Trump’s leadership, focusing on “peace through strength.”

As Europe reacts to Trump’s re-election, leaders emphasize the resilience of shared values and strategic alliances between Europe and the United States.
