NCC Boost Internet Speed in Nigeria with 6GHz Spectrum Deployment

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that it is taking steps to harness the 6GHz spectrum in a bid to significantly enhance internet speeds across the country. This development was revealed on Thursday by the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, during a Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies held in Lagos.

Dr. Maida, represented at the event by the NCC’s Executive Commissioner of Technical Services, Abraham Oshadami, outlined the critical need to adopt the 6GHz spectrum due to increasing capacity constraints faced by the existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

These constraints, according to Maida, are becoming more pronounced as internet usage grows and demand for faster, more reliable connectivity rises.

The 6GHz spectrum refers to a band of radio frequencies between 5925 MHz and 7125 MHz, which has the potential to provide significantly faster data rates and transmission speeds compared to the current 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

This higher-frequency spectrum is expected to address the growing need for high-speed internet and more advanced digital applications, particularly as Nigeria works to keep pace with global advancements in wireless technology.

“The 6GHz band offers a substantial increase in available spectrum, which is vital for meeting the rising demand for faster internet access and for supporting advanced digital services,” Dr. Maida said during his speech.

He highlighted that the new spectrum would also contribute to more efficient data transmission and lower latency rates, ensuring that both homes and businesses benefit from improved internet performance.

Wi-Fi technology, in particular, is expected to see significant benefits from the deployment of the 6GHz spectrum. Maida emphasized the central role Wi-Fi plays in providing fixed broadband connectivity to a vast number of users.

He noted that in residential settings, most internet traffic is channeled through Wi-Fi networks, and the additional spectrum would greatly improve the capacity and performance of these networks.

“Wi-Fi is crucial for distributing fixed broadband connectivity in homes, offices, and other environments. The vast majority of home internet traffic reaches end users through Wi-Fi, which underscores the importance of this move.”

“In enterprise environments, Wi-Fi also plays a pivotal role by supporting large amounts of data and ensuring the reliable connection of multiple devices simultaneously, all with improved data throughput and lower latency,” he explained.

The NCC’s plan to explore the 6GHz spectrum will align Nigeria with other countries that have already begun utilizing portions of the band for next-generation Wi-Fi applications, particularly Wi-Fi 6.
