The Committee on Consequential Adjustments in Salaries for civil servants has reached a consensus on the implementation date for the new national minimum wage, which is set to take effect from July 29, 2024.
This decision was outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) issued after the committee’s meeting, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Friday.
According to the MoU, “The National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC) will generate the appropriate salary templates for other consolidated salary structures for implementation. The effective date of implementation shall be July 29, 2024.”
This crucial step marks the commencement of efforts to adjust civil servants’ salaries in line with the newly approved minimum wage.
The committee was established following the enactment of the National Minimum Wage Act 2024, which increased the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.
Comprising 16 members, the committee’s mandate is to oversee the implementation of the law by ensuring appropriate adjustments are made to the salaries of civil servants across various levels of government.

The committee’s terms of reference include negotiating the consequential salary adjustments resulting from the new minimum wage and developing a comprehensive template for the smooth implementation of the new wage structure.
By focusing on these key areas, the committee aims to ensure that the new wage policy is applied effectively and fairly across the public sector.
This move is expected to significantly improve the living standards of civil servants, providing much-needed financial relief and aligning with the government’s broader goals of promoting economic stability and social welfare.
