Van Nistelrooy Joins Ten Hag’s Backroom Team at Manchester United Amid Speculation
Manchester United has welcomed a familiar face back to Old Trafford, with Ruud van Nistelrooy joining the backroom team under fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag.
The former striker, who scored 150 goals for United over five seasons during his playing career, returns to the club with managerial experience, having led Eredivisie giants PSV during the 2022-23 campaign.
This strategic addition to United’s coaching staff has sparked significant discussion among football pundits and former players.
Dwight Yorke, a member of United’s historic 1999 Treble-winning squad, offered his perspective while speaking to BoyleSports, which provides the latest Champions League betting odds. Yorke addressed the potential implications of Van Nistelrooy’s arrival on Ten Hag’s position, stating,
“It’s obvious to everyone what Manchester United would do if they sacked Erik ten Hag, and that’s to appoint Ruud van Nistelrooy. It’s really not an ideal situation if you are the manager. I know Ruud personally, and he’s a great guy with his own ambitions, which he has made clear in the past. I can only speak for myself, but I don’t really like going into a job knowing that if things don’t go well for your boss, you might step into that position.”

Yorke further elaborated on the potential tension this move might create, considering United recently extended Ten Hag’s contract.
“Something is not quite right about that, in my opinion, because although Ruud is very professional, I’m sure he’ll go in there and do all his due diligence for the manager and work under the manager’s regime. But I don’t like the bigger picture. I’ve got to be honest. I’d rather sit on the side and be clear in my intention of being a full-time manager.”
Yorke continued, “I just think the environment is not quite right, even though you’re pushing for the team to win, and I’m sure that’s the case with Ruud. But if things don’t go well, then there is only one person who’s going to take the blame and be sacked.”
“That is unless Ruud decides to leave if Ten Hag goes, but personally, I wouldn’t like to be in his position. I’ve seen it with Roy Keane under Paul Lambert and under Martin O’Neill as well; it wasn’t for Roy Keane to be a number two. And I like to think Ruud is similar in that sense. However, it’s such a great opportunity to be at United, and it’s not easy to turn your back on any role there.”
Erik ten Hag, who guided Manchester United to FA Cup glory last season following a Carabao Cup triumph in his debut campaign, has faced scrutiny regarding his long-term future. Despite these challenges, the club has shown faith in Ten Hag, extending his contract through to the summer of 2026.
