MTN, a leading mobile telecommunications provider, has announced the closure of all its stores and service centers across Nigeria. This decision follows widespread outrage from subscribers after the network provider barred numerous lines on Sunday.
A video that went viral on social media on Monday captured a mob destroying a barricade fence outside an MTN office.
The footage depicted a large crowd of irate subscribers vandalizing the telecommunications company’s office in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State. The subscribers were reacting to MTN’s blocking of their lines due to mismatches between their National Identification Numbers (NIN) and SIM registrations.

In response to the circulated video, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated on X.com that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of FESTAC and his team had successfully restored order and peace at the scene. He emphasized that such violent reactions were not the solution.
On Tuesday, MTN responded to the situation by announcing the nationwide closure of its shops. A statement on X.com read, “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024.”
This measure underscores the seriousness of the situation and MTN’s commitment to addressing the concerns of its subscribers while ensuring the safety of its staff and customers.
The company has urged its customers to remain calm and assured them that efforts are underway to resolve the issues related to the NIN-SIM registration mismatches.
