Mbappe to Acquire Majority Shares in Caen, Becoming Club’s Major Stakeholder

In a significant development, Kylian Mbappe is reportedly set to acquire a controlling stake in the French football club Caen.

According to Le Parisien, the star footballer will invest just under €20 million (£17 million/$22 million) to purchase the majority of the shares in the club. Pierre-Antin Capton will retain the remaining shares, valued at €5 million (£4.2 million/$5.4 million).

Mbappe, who recently became the highest earner at Real Madrid with a net wage of €15 million (£13 million/$16 million) per year, is making a significant financial commitment to Caen.

While his salary at Real Madrid represents a notable decrease from his previous contract with Paris Saint-Germain, he is set to receive a signing bonus exceeding €100 million (£84 million/$108 million) over the duration of his contract, compensating for the pay cut.

Additionally, Forbes has valued Mbappe’s endorsement deals at around $20 million (£16 million) as of early 2024, underscoring his substantial wealth.

Mbappe’s connection with Caen dates back to his youth. The club recognized his potential early on and nearly signed him, envisioning a supportive environment for his development. However, the deal fell through when Caen was relegated from Ligue 1.

In the immediate future, Mbappe is focused on making his debut for Real Madrid, anticipated to occur in next month’s UEFA Super Cup. Despite his current commitments, his investment in Caen highlights his long-term vision for the club.

Caen, traditionally a yo-yo team, has been in France’s second tier since 2019. Mbappe’s involvement could potentially transform the club’s fortunes.

Looking ahead, Mbappe may even consider playing for Caen at some point in his career, emulating Didier Drogba’s stint at USL side Phoenix Rising in 2017.

His investment not only signifies a financial commitment but also a personal and emotional connection to the club, potentially paving the way for a future role on and off the pitch.
