Following the appointment of Ashworth as the new sporting director, Manchester United is reportedly on the verge of naming their former player Michael Appleton as the club’s loan manager, according to The Sun.
Appleton, a graduate of the Red Devils’ youth academy, had a playing career that spanned several English clubs before retiring in 2003. Post-retirement, he ventured into management, leading teams such as Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers, and Leicester City.
The report indicates that Appleton will join the transfer team under Ashworth’s leadership, taking charge of managing loan deals both incoming and outgoing.

This role was previously held by former Tranmere manager Les Perry, who will now be succeeded by Appleton.
Appleton, now 48, has prior experience working with Ashworth at West Bromwich Albion, where he began his coaching career as a caretaker manager in 2011. Their professional relationship is described as being particularly strong.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s pre-season has had a rocky start, with Erik ten Hag’s squad losing two of their first three friendly matches, including a defeat to Arsenal. The team is set to play against Real Betis on July 31 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, as they continue their preparations for the upcoming season.
