The Centre is set to play a pivotal role in developing standards and infrastructure for 6G networks globally, according to Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary (Telecom).
Speaking at the inauguration of a centre of excellence on 6G at IIT-M Research Park in Chennai, Mr. Mittal emphasized that this initiative is a key component of the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ document released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March last year.
Prime Minister Modi has envisioned India as a leading force in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030. Mr. Mittal highlighted that this initiative aims to foster a cohesive and coordinated effort to advance 6G technology, ensuring that all projects benefit from the collective expertise and resources available.
The newly inaugurated centre of excellence is a sub-centre of the Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCoE)-India, which will spearhead the development and deployment of 6G technology. This next-generation technology promises unprecedented speeds, ultra-low latency, and enhanced connectivity.
The centre is set to serve as a hub for innovation, bringing together academic and industry experts to collaborate on cutting-edge projects.

In this collaborative environment, the centre will foster the development of new applications and services that leverage 6G’s capabilities.
It will also facilitate interconnectivity with the existing 5G Test Bed at IIT Madras, which was developed through a collaborative project involving eight institutes and funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
The 5G Test Bed, inaugurated by PM Modi in May 2022, has been extensively used by both industry and academia for testing new 5G products and use-cases.
The DoT has funded two next-generation testbeds to further advance 6G research. Under the Bharat 6G Vision, the DoT is currently evaluating 470 proposals focused on ‘Accelerated Research on 6G Ecosystem.’ This vision is aligned with India’s goal to become a front-line contributor in the global 6G landscape by 2030.
Dr. Mittal underscored the importance of this initiative in creating a unified approach to advancing 6G technology. He noted that the centre would not only drive innovation but also ensure that India remains at the forefront of the global telecommunications industry.
The centre’s efforts are expected to yield significant advancements in 6G technology, positioning India as a key player in the global telecommunications arena.
