Liverpool FC Temporarily Halts Premier League Ticket Sales Following Cyber Attack
Liverpool FC has faced a significant disruption in their ticketing operations following a sophisticated cyber attack, which has prompted the club to temporarily halt the sale of tickets for their home Premier League games in the first half of the 2024-25 season.
According to The Athletic, the ticket sales, which began on Wednesday for members who attended 13 or more league matches at Anfield last season, were abruptly stopped due to a ‘serious technical issue’ with the ticketing system.
The club later revealed that the disruption was caused by a ‘sophisticated bot attack.’ This type of cyber attack employs automated scripts to overwhelm and exploit the system, leading to the halt in ticket sales.
In response, Liverpool FC has initiated a thorough investigation to understand how the bot attack penetrated their ticketing system. Initially, there were plans to reopen the ticket sales later on Wednesday, but these plans were postponed, and the sales remained suspended on Thursday as well.
An email from Liverpool’s ticketing team, shared by The Athletic, expressed the club’s disappointment and frustration over the incident.

“This is hugely disappointing and frustrating as we have made a number of significant improvements to our supplier’s ticketing system to try and prevent this type of cybercrime.”

“We are sorry we have not managed to prevent unacceptable fraudulent activity which has impacted our genuine and valued supporters.”
The Athletic reports that the ticketing system is managed by a third-party provider, who will now implement additional security measures to prevent future attacks.
Liverpool FC has assured fans that they are working diligently to resolve the issue and will announce a new date for ticket sales once the system is secured. While it is expected that ticket sales will resume in the coming weeks, the exact motivation behind the cyber attack remains unclear.
