A few weeks after stepping down as the head coach of the Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles, Finidi George has embraced a new opportunity and is set for an exciting challenge.
The former Ajax star has signed a contract as the Technical Manager for Rivers United, a team competing in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). He is slated to be officially introduced by the Port Harcourt-based club in the coming days.
The club officially announced the arrival of the 52-year-old Finidi George in a post on its X account on Wednesday.
An official from Rivers United, who requested anonymity, revealed to PREMIUM TIMES, “He (Finidi) has signed a two-year deal and will be unveiled on Thursday.” This appointment marks a homecoming for Finidi, who began his professional football journey in Port Harcourt with Sharks FC, a club that has since evolved into the present-day Rivers United.
Finidi George’s football career is illustrious. He gained international recognition playing for Ajax, Real Betis, and other foreign clubs. His return to manage a club from his home city adds a nostalgic and celebratory dimension to his new role.
Rivers United previously found success under the guidance of veteran coach Stanley Eguma, who was dismissed during the season and temporarily replaced by Evans Ogenyi. Despite their rich history, the team struggled in the latest NPFL season, finishing eighth—their poorest performance since ending in ninth place six seasons ago.

As a member of Nigeria’s celebrated ‘Golden Generation,’ Finidi George’s contributions to football are significant. He was part of the squad that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s impressive debut at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA, where the team was hailed as the second most entertaining side.
Over his international career, Finidi earned 62 caps for Nigeria and participated in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals. His achievements include gold, silver, and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
Before his tenure with the national team, Finidi George was at the helm of Enyimba International in the NPFL. Under his leadership, Enyimba clinched the NPFL title in his second season with the club, cementing his reputation as a successful coach.
Now, as he takes on his new role with Rivers United, he aims to replicate this success. Rivers United last won the league title emphatically in the 2021/22 season, and Finidi’s expertise and experience could be key to steering them back to the top.
