NASA is gearing up for the monumental task of decommissioning the International Space Station (ISS) and has awarded SpaceX a contract worth up to $843 million to safely bring the ISS back to Earth. This significant decision marks a critical phase in space exploration, as the iconic space station nears the end of its operational life.
According to NASA’s plans, SpaceX will develop a specially designed deorbit vehicle to guide the ISS out of orbit and ensure its controlled descent back to Earth. This ambitious project is scheduled to take place sometime after 2030, the projected end of the ISS’s operational timeline.
The ISS, which is roughly the size of a football field, will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at a staggering speed of over 17,000 mph (27,500 km/h) before descending to a designated crash site in the ocean.
Ken Bowersox, NASA’s associate administrator for the Space Operations Mission Directorate, emphasized the importance of this initiative in a recent statement.

Recently, on June 27, nine astronauts aboard the ISS had to take shelter in the docked Boeing Starliner crew capsule. This precaution was necessary due to the threat posed by hundreds of pieces of debris from a shattered Russian satellite.
Fortunately, the crew was able to return to the ISS after about an hour, and operations resumed as normal. Nevertheless, this incident highlighted the persistent dangers posed by space junk.
While NASA has earmarked 2030 as the target date for ending the ISS’s operational life, the exact timing of its deorbiting remains uncertain.
