A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the central coast of Peru on Friday, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor’s epicenter was located 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) from the Atiquipa district.
The USGS initially reported a lower magnitude but soon revised it to 7.2 following further analysis. The strong shaking from the quake was likely felt in regions close to the epicenter, causing significant concern among residents.
In response to the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued an alert, forecasting hazardous tsunami waves for certain coastal areas.
However, after closely monitoring the situation, the center later confirmed that the tsunami threat had passed. “There is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake,” the center announced, providing some relief to the affected communities.
