Sedentary Non-Coffee Drinkers at 60% Higher Risk of Mortality: A Study Reveals
A recent study published in the journal BioMed Central (BMC) Public Health highlights a striking correlation between sedentary lifestyles, coffee consumption, and mortality risk.
According to the research, individuals who do not drink coffee and spend six or more hours a day sitting are at a nearly 60% higher risk of dying compared to their counterparts who drink coffee and sit for less than six hours a day.
The Study and Its Findings
The study, conducted by researchers at the Medical College of Soochow University’s School of Public Health in China, followed over 10,000 adults in the United States for up to 13 years.
Their findings underscore an increased mortality risk among sedentary non-coffee drinkers, a risk not observed in those who consume coffee.
Interestingly, the researchers also discovered that coffee drinkers who lead sedentary lives have a 24% lower risk of death compared to non-coffee drinkers who sit for at least six hours daily. This particular result, although not included in the original study, was calculated at the request of The Washington Post and highlighted in their report.
The Health Benefits of Coffee
“The benefits of coffee consumption in improving overall survival in adults compared to sedentary behaviour are manifold,” the study authors noted.

They explained that coffee consumption appears to mitigate some of the adverse effects of a sedentary lifestyle, particularly by reducing the risk of metabolic problems that exacerbate inflammation. Chronic inflammation is a known contributor to increased mortality risk in sedentary individuals.
The study revealed that among the quarter of participants who consumed the highest amounts of coffee, the risk of dying from any cause was reduced by 33% compared to non-coffee drinkers.
This finding is consistent with previous research, which has also linked higher coffee consumption to a reduced risk of death from all causes, including heart disease.
The Science Behind Coffee’s Benefits
Compounds found in coffee, such as caffeine and polyphenols, possess anti-inflammatory properties. However, the exact mechanisms through which coffee confers its protective effects against mortality are still not fully understood. The researchers emphasized the need for further investigation to unravel the complexities of how coffee impacts health and longevity.
Sedentary Behavior and Increased Mortality Risk
The study also highlighted the dangers of prolonged sitting. Sitting for more than eight hours a day was associated with over a 40% higher risk of death from any cause and nearly an 80% higher risk of dying due to heart disease. This data was drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which monitors the health and nutritional status of Americans.
Conclusion and Future Research
“Given that coffee is a complex compound, further research is needed to explore this miracle compound,” the authors concluded. Their findings suggest that while sedentary behavior is detrimental to health, coffee consumption could offer some protective benefits.

However, it is clear that reducing sedentary time and increasing physical activity remain crucial components of a healthy lifestyle.
In summary, this study underscores the potential health benefits of coffee, especially for those with sedentary habits, and calls for more comprehensive research to fully understand the relationship between coffee consumption, sedentary behavior, and overall mortality risk.
