VAR Controversy Can’t Mask Belgium’s Finishing Woes in Shocking Euro 2024 Opener
Belgium’s Euro 2024 campaign began with a nightmare, falling to a surprising 1-0 defeat against Slovakia despite dominating possession and having two goals chalked off by VAR.

The game truly went awry for the Red Devils through a self-inflicted error. Doku’s misplaced pass inside their own box was intercepted, leading to Ivan Schranz’s goal for Slovakia. Lukaku’s night continued to be one of missed chances. When he finally managed to find the net – twice – VAR intervened. The first goal was disallowed for offside, while the second was chalked off due to a handball by substitute Lois Openda.
The second half saw Belgium completely control the game. They enjoyed a staggering 70% possession advantage and peppered the Slovakian goal with seven shots.
Yet, a combination of their own wasteful finishing and some debatable VAR calls kept them at bay. Ultimately, Belgium were left to rue their missed opportunities and defensive lapses, paying a heavy price for a lack of clinical finishing in a tournament opener they were expected to win.
