In a decisive move, English Premier League clubs have voted to retain the use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR), despite the considerable criticism the technology faced throughout the past season.
The decision was made during the Premier League’s annual general meeting on Thursday, where 19 out of the 20 clubs voted in favor of continuing with VAR. Wolverhampton Wanderers was the sole club to oppose, having previously called for the abolition of the system.
Wolverhampton’s opposition to VAR stemmed from what the club perceived as the technology undermining the integrity and value of the Premier League brand.
The Midlands club cited a season replete with contentious decisions that had sparked widespread debate and frustration among players, managers, and fans alike.
Since its introduction to the Premier League in 2019, VAR aimed to assist referees in correcting clear and obvious errors that previously marred matches.
However, the 2023-2024 season saw an escalation in controversies surrounding its application. These controversies fueled growing discontent among Premier League managers and fans, who became increasingly vocal in their criticism of the technology.

In a statement following the vote, the Premier League conceded that while VAR does lead to more accurate decision-making, the technology’s implementation must be refined to better serve the game and its supporters.
“While VAR produces more accurate decision making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and supporters,” the Premier League stated.
Looking ahead, the league plans to introduce several enhancements to the VAR system in an effort to address the criticisms.
Semiautomated offside technology (SAOT) is set to be implemented next season to expedite offside checks. This innovation aims to reduce the time taken for these reviews, thus minimizing disruptions during matches.
Additionally, the Premier League announced plans for in-stadium announcements to inform fans of any on-field decisions changed following VAR interventions, thereby enhancing transparency.
The Premier League also confirmed that the “high threshold” for VAR intervention would be maintained to ensure only clear and significant errors are addressed.

Moreover, in collaboration with the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL), the league is lobbying the International Football Association Board (IFAB) for greater flexibility to allow live video and audio broadcasts during VAR reviews.
