Hunter Biden, the often troubled son of President Joe Biden, began his trial on federal gun charges on Monday, marking the first time in history that the child of a sitting president has faced such prosecution. This case presents a potential complication for President Biden’s reelection campaign.
Hunter Biden stands accused of providing false information about his illegal drug use when purchasing a handgun in 2018, a charge classified as a felony.
Hunter Biden, a Yale-trained lawyer and artist, is on trial for falsely stating on legal paperwork in 2018 that he was not using drugs illegally when purchasing a .38 caliber Colt Cobra revolver. He also faces charges for illegal possession of the firearm, which he owned for 11 days.
Despite pleading not guilty, Biden’s previous plea deal collapsed, leading to the trial. Prosecutors plan to present extensive and often uncomfortable evidence related to his years of addiction, NDTV Report.
The 54-year-old arrived at the courthouse in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, accompanied by several family members, including First Lady Jill Biden. President Biden was not in attendance. Jury selection commenced, with the trial anticipated to last between one to two weeks.
In a statement marking the beginning of the trial and coinciding with First Lady Jill Biden’s 73rd birthday, President Biden expressed his unwavering support for his son.

Trump, Biden’s Republican challenger for the upcoming election, is also facing three other serious criminal cases, including his alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
Hunter Biden, who is also facing tax evasion charges in California, has brought an embarrassing distraction for President Biden as he seeks reelection and aims to focus public attention on Trump’s legal issues.
