Iceland’s Volcano Erupts for Fifth Time Since December, Spewing Lava 50 Meters Skyward

A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted with spectacular force, sending streams of molten lava soaring more than 50 meters (164 feet) into the air, on Wednesday.

This marks the fifth eruption since December and stands as the most powerful event since the volcanic system in this region became active three years ago, NDTV Reports.

Authorities had previously cautioned about the potential for renewed volcanic activity in the area, situated just south of Reykjavik, the nation’s capital. Scientific studies had indicated that magma was accumulating underground, heightening the risk of an eruption.

This latest volcanic activity commenced shortly after the conclusion of an eight-week-long eruption between Hagafell and Stora-Skogfell on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported that the lava fountains reached impressive heights of 50 meters. Additionally, the volcanic fissure spanned approximately 3.4 kilometers, highlighting the extensive scale of this eruption.

The first assessment of scientists is that the beginning of this eruption is more powerful than in previous eruptions”, the office said.

This significant geological event continues to draw attention from both scientists and the public, emphasizing Iceland’s dynamic and ever-changing volcanic landscape.

Despite the dramatic eruption, flights at Reykjavik’s Keflavik Airport continued as scheduled, as confirmed by the airport’s website.

The fiery display highlights the unique challenges faced by Iceland, a nation of nearly 400,000 residents. Scientists have cautioned that the Reykjanes Peninsula, which has become increasingly active, could experience repeated eruptions for decades, or possibly even centuries, into the future.

Wednesday’s eruption marks the eighth such event on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021. This area, home to approximately 30,000 people, had remained dormant for 800 years before its geological systems reawakened. The reactivation of these systems underscores the unpredictable and dynamic nature of Iceland’s volcanic activity.
