Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, expressed his belief that artificial intelligence (AI) will ultimately lead to the elimination of all jobs, though he doesn’t view this as inherently negative.
During his remote appearance at the Viva Tech event in Paris on Thursday, Musk discussed the transformative impact of AI on the job market.
Speaking via webcam to the audience at the startup and tech conference, he envisioned a future where employment becomes optional, predicting a world where “probably none of us will have a job.”
“If you want to do a job that’s kinda like a hobby, you can do a job. But otherwise, AI and the robots will provide any goods and services that you want. There would be no shortage of goods or services, I do think there’s perhaps still a role for humans in this – in that we may give AI meaning” he said.
Musk emphasized that for this vision of the future to be successful, it would require the implementation of a “universal high income.”
This concept involves the government providing a set amount of money to all citizens, independent of their earnings, distinguishing it from the more commonly discussed universal basic income.

He pointed out that AI technology has made significant strides in recent years, progressing at such a rapid pace that regulators, businesses, and individuals are still grappling with how to harness and manage this powerful tool responsibly.
During his address, Musk stressed the urgent need for society to adapt to these technological advancements to ensure they are used ethically and beneficially.
Musk also offered advice to parents, urging them to monitor and restrict their children’s social media usage. He cautioned that social media platforms are driven by algorithms designed to maximize user engagement through dopamine-inducing content. This, he explained, can lead to addictive behaviors and other negative consequences.
Musk stressed the importance of being aware of how these AI-driven platforms operate and the potential impact they can have on young minds. By setting boundaries on social media consumption, parents can help mitigate these effects and promote healthier habits for their children.
