Shrinivas R. Kulkarni, an Indian-origin professor of astronomy based in the United States, has been honored with the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy.
Kulkarni, who holds the title of George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science at the California Institute of Technology, is being recognized for his groundbreaking discoveries concerning millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical phenomena.
The Shaw Prize is renowned for celebrating significant advancements in scientific research, and this year, it acknowledges the profound contributions of several exceptional scientists.
Alongside Professor Kulkarni, other distinguished recipients include Swee Lay Thein and Stuart Orkin, both from the United States, who have been jointly awarded the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine for their pivotal research. Additionally, Peter Sarnak, another eminent U.S. scientist, has been honored with the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences for his influential work in the field.

“Shrinivas R. Kulkarni contributions to time-domain astronomy culminated in the conception, construction and leadership of the Palomar Transient Factory and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Facility, which has revolutionized our understanding of the time-variable optical sky.”
The Shaw Prize, now in its 21st year, continues to honor exceptional contributions in the fields of Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences. Each of these prestigious awards comes with a substantial monetary prize of USD 1.2 million, underscoring the significance of the recipients’ groundbreaking work.
