Businessman and investor, Elon Reeve Musk on Sunday launched his Starlink satellite internet service in Bali, Indonesia, as part of the country’s efforts to expand internet access to its remote areas.

Indonesia, an archipelago with over 17,000 islands, has millions of residents without reliable internet connectivity.

Marking his first visit to the Southeast Asian nation, the Tech Billionaire inaugurated the satellite internet services at a clinic in Denpasar, Bali’s capital.

The event was attended by Indonesia’s Health Minister, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, with whom Musk signed an agreement focused on improving the health sector.

During the visit, Musk and Indonesian officials participated in a presentation by staff from community clinics in Bali and the Maluku provinces.

The presentation highlighted the significant improvement in internet speeds following the implementation of Starlink.

The satellite internet service has already been pilot-tested in three health facilities across these regions.

These tests have enabled the efficient input of crucial data sets into the national system, including information on immunizations, child nutrition, and diabetes.

“We are very excited to bring connectivity to places that either have no connectivity or, as you saw in the demonstration, very low bandwidth connectivity.”

“So, this can make a really lifesaver for remote medical clinics. And I think it can be transformative for education as well”,  Musk stated at a press conference.

The introduction of Starlink in Indonesia represents a significant step forward in the nation’s digital infrastructure, aiming to enhance connectivity and support various sectors, particularly healthcare, by ensuring that even the most remote areas have access to fast and reliable internet services.
