The former US Senator and the first Jewish vice-presidential nominee, Joe Lieberman has passed away at the age of 82.
The American politician and lawyer who was a former Connecticut senator died on Wednesday, 27th March, 2024.
According to the statement obtained from his family, the cause of his death was due to complications from a fall in New York, while his wife Hadassah and members of his family were by his side.
Ary Freilich, his brother-in-law stated that Mr. Lieberman’s fall happened at his home in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and he passed away at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Upper Manhattan.

The pinnacle of Lieberman’s political career arrived when he was chosen in 2000 as the running mate of Al Gore, the Democratic presidential nominee.
Eventually, the contested election was resolved in favor’s of Texas Gov. George W. Bush by the Supreme Court.
However, Lieberman hailed his selection as a historic breakthrough for Jewish Americans, which he will be remembered as one of the last major statesmen of an era when true bipartisanship felt possible in Washington, before today’s polarized times.
During his farewell speech to the Senate in 2012, Lieberman lamented the state of politics and what it had evolved into, he said:

“It is the partisan polarization of our politics which prevents us from making the principled compromises on which progress in a democracy depends, and right now, which prevents us from restoring our fiscal solvency as a nation, we need bipartisan leadership to break the gridlock in Washington that will unleash all the potential that is in the American people.”
Reacting to the news, Mr. Gore expressed his profound saddened, saying:
“It was an honour to stand side-by-side with him on the campaign trail, I’ll remain forever grateful for his tireless efforts to build a better future for America.”
